Healthcare-specific experience matters more than general managed IT competency. Look for demonstrated HIPAA Security Rule expertise, familiarity with your EHR platform, experience managing medical device environments, and a willingness to sign a Business Associate Agreement, some IT providers decline to sign BAAs, which disqualifies them immediately. References from comparable healthcare organizations, documented incident response procedures for ePHI breaches, and evidence of ongoing HIPAA training for their own staff are all reasonable due diligence criteria.
